Heat pump
Heat pumps pull heat from the outside air and transfer it into the pool water. Most efficient option to run — about $50–$150/month during use. Slow to warm the pool (2–4 days from 60°F to swim temp). Best for extending shoulder season (May, September, October). $4,500–$7,000 installed.
Natural gas
Gas heaters warm water fast — a few hours to bring the pool up. Run cost is $200–$500/month during heavy use. Best for on-demand warming (weekend guests, entertaining). Requires a gas line at the equipment pad. $3,500–$5,500 installed plus gas line if needed.
Our recommendation
For most Delaware County pools, we recommend a heat pump as the primary. For homes that entertain heavily or want on-demand hot tubs, we add a gas heater on the spa loop for fast warm-up.
